A new hobby I'm trying

This topic from Long and Short Reviews was tricky at first, because none of my goals for 2020 involved trying a new hobby. However, in the last day or two I came up with something I do intend to try.

Cooking.

As a rule, I don't cook - I heat. Nearly everything I eat comes out of a box. I have been known to burn water. However, my local supermarket has stopped selling the stuffed peppers I really liked, so I've been looking online for recipes and have decided to try making some.

Which led to me deciding to try one new recipe a month.

How well this will go is open to question, but I'm planning to stick to things I think I can actually do - there will be no sign-ups for the Great British Bake Off in this house. I am considering buying an ice-cream maker though, if I can convince myself it won't go like the rice cooker and end up sitting in a box under the sink for years.

So what hobbies are you working on?

  1. I love cooking... the cleaning up not so much... and Bob loves to eat, so it works well for us! My rice cooker and ice cream machine, I don't use much... but let's talk the InstaPot and the air fryer oven... :-)

    1. I do have an air fryer, but we mostly use it for frozen chips.

  2. I don't much like cooking. I DO like baking (and, the British Baking Show, as it's called here over the pond, is one of my favorite baking shows to watch!). I actually don't care for stuffed peppers because it's a pain to get pepper in every bite, so I make them deconstructed. Good luck with yours!!

    1. I'm told that cooking is an art and baking is a science, so I stay well away from baking. I'd destroy the place.

  3. The boys bought an air fryer for me for Christmas. I thought it might go that way, but it's quite nice to fry up french fries without the grease. I'm not much of a chef, so heating things in the air fryer is perfect for me. Good for you to learn how to make stuffed peppers. :-) Good luck!

    1. My next thought is Irish champ, which I love. I can do decent mashed potatoes so it's the next step up.

  5. Cooking is a great hobby to try! I don't love cooking by any means, but my husband does and we'll cook together (or he will while I taste test nearby!). We're trying out an air fryer this year that my parents bought us and so far, it's pretty cool.

    1. We don't cook much more than a fried breakfast so it'll be an eye opener.

  6. Ah, I love to cook! But it can be intimidating if you're not used to it. Just remember what Emeril always said: It's not rocket science. Read the recipe BEFORE you start cooking and you should be good. Have fun!

    My post!

  7. I fall in the heat category, but every once in a while I'll follow a recipe. I leave the baking to my wife. https://pmprescott.blogspot.com/2020/01/wednesday-challenge-012220.html

  8. Ooh, definitely buy the icecream machine. They're really easy to use and home-made icecream is so lovely. I have two because one batch is never enough. Although these are the ones where you freeze the bowl and the beating unit fits over the top. What I'd really love is one of those actual freezer unit ones. They're too expensive to justify though, and I'm trying not to scoff so much sweet stuff. Hope you give it a go!

  10. I love cooking! Have you considered finding a local restaurant that might offer lessons? That might be fun! I hope you share your cooking adventures with us this year. :)

    1. There are a few places that do, it's just a matter of finding the right cuisine.

  11. Trying one recipe a month is a great idea. I do like cooking and it could be a fun hobby if I didn't have to cater to the taste buds of my young adult children who still live at home. They are pretty good but if it was just my hubby and I, I think I would experiment a whole lot more. I could not buy an ice cream machine though. I love ice cream way too much to have that kind of temptation around. LOL

    1. That's the only issue - it'll all be for me, and a lot of recipes are for at least two people. My husband doesn't like a lot of things.

  12. I love cooking! I'm a pretty good cook but my issue with "burning" happens when I step away so I either
    A) put on music or tv in the kitchen and then I DO NOT LEAVE THE KITCHEN AT ALL COST or
    B) set a reminder on my phone to check the food 5 minutes before the "cook time" is up and then just keep resetting it for 2-5 more minutes as needed.

As for new recipes, there are so many "beginner" recipes and "newbie" recipes that I think you're going to have plenty of options for your new hobby.
