Books I had to read in school and liked

Just a couple of weeks ago I was blogging on books I had to read in school and hated. Now Long and Short Reviews has us on books we had to read in school and liked. Needless to say, that is a much shorter list, because I can think of nothing more likely to make you hate a book than having to dissect it line by line.

It all boils down to one author, really...

Shakespeare.

I studied Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest in school, saw them multiple times on stage, and from that point on I had developed a lifelong love of Shakespeare. It's my ambition to see every Shakespeare play in the theatre at least once, and I've seen two this year and have tickets for another.

So what - if anything - did you like that you had to read in school?

  1. I'm with you on Shakespeare, but will all the books we had to read in school rather than read it according to the word count the teacher gave us, I would read the entire book to start with (I was always a fast reader). So, I was able to enjoy the book before getting into the drudgery of it. My post is live here.

    1. I probably should have done that. It might have made them more enjoyable.

  3. What I enjoyed about Shakespeare was having a role and reading it aloud. I was Mercutio. When I taught 9th grade English I substituted Taming of the Shrew for Romeo and Juliet. There was a national awareness of teen suicide at the time.

    1. They never let us do that, sadly. We got one line each.

  4. I liked Romeo and Juliet. I know it's not a romance, but I did like it. Good for you on seeing the plays in the theatre. That sounds so cool. :-)

    1. It was the first one I'd read, and everyone was scandalised at the references to sex.

    1. They're definitely better on stage than on paper.

    1. Depends on the play - some were better than others.
