When this topic from Long and Short Reviews came up, I had to think about it. I was trying to avoid the usual ones I come up with for these things, like Jane Eyre or Emma Woodhouse, who I would certainly like to meet but who tend to be the type of characters everyone thinks of.
Although it would be interesting to meet Emma Woodhouse and see if she's as charismatic in person as she seems to be in the book, given that everyone likes her in spite of her attitude.
But the one I ended up deciding on? Lux Lisbon from "The Virgin Suicides". Lux is the character most clearly described and has the most life on the page - she's lively, she's fun and you want her to get what she wants. Which, as any new reader can probably tell from the book title, isn't going to happen, but despite knowing she's walking towards a tragic end, we want her to win.
So which characters would you want to meet?
Such a great book!
ReplyDeleteI've always liked it.
DeleteShe sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteShe's definitely the best character in the book.
DeleteIt's been quite some time since I read Jan Eyre, might be time again. I am not familiar with Emme Woodhouse, but it sounds as if I should be. Thanks much for the idea!
ReplyDelete"Emma" is my favourite Jane Austen novel - always worth a look.
DeleteI've not read that book, but Lux does sound like an interesting person!

She's the best written character in it.
DeleteI thought about the old time characters in some of the classics, as many of them would be great to meet but I went a little different with my list. I also enjoyed VS and Lux would be an interesting one to meet
ReplyDeleteShe definitely would.
DeleteEmma would be a fascinating character if you could stand all her meddling, which, to be honest, I probably wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteShe definitely has her bad points, but I've always liked her.
DeleteNot familiar with this character, but fun and lively sounds good to me. Thanks for sharing.
